Welcome to
the Commissioners Corner for the Saugahatchee District,
Chattahoochee Council. Commissioner service is an exciting
aspect of Scouting for adult Scouters where the expertise
and experiences gained from their own Scouting experiences
as well as their professional lives is used to assist the
Packs, Troops and Crews in their District.
I’m Gordon
Bugg, District Commissioner for the Saugahatchee District.
For any questions about Commissioner service or if
you’d like to volunteer, please feel free to e-mail me at:

What
is a Commissioner?
Commissioners at the District level have a number of
specialized areas, but the most important is the Unit
Commissioner. The Unit Commissioner is assigned to work with
units (usually three or four, and can be Packs, Troops,
Crews or any combination) as an advisor and mentor,
primarily to the adult leaders of the unit to insure that
the adult leaders can focus on providing the best possible
Scouting experience to the young men (and in the case of
Crews, young women) in their units.
Commissioners serve
as an “outside of the unit” resource and
sounding board for the units, helping units resolve
issues as well as sharing ideas and practices seen in other
units. The purpose of the Commissioner is to enable to unit
to achieve the goals of Scouting: Instill young men (and
women) with values that will help them build character,
train them in the responsibilities of participating
citizenship and develop personal fitness.
What does
it take to be a Commissioner?
Anyone who works well in diverse groups, is a good listener,
is able to see different points of view and has good verbal
and written communication skills. A willingness to serve is
key. Keep in mind, Commissioners are working primarily with
the volunteer adult leaders in the unit.
A Scouting background is not a requirement, although
it does help get up the learning curve.
Good Commissioners are in short supply, so if you
read this and would like more information, please feel free
to contact me at the e-mail listed above.
What
training is required?
To become a Unit Commissioner, the regular BSA Adult Leader
registration form is used and submitted to the District
Commissioner. Once the background check is completed, you
will receive your BSA Adult Registration card and member
number. Specific
training for Unit Commissioners includes:
“Youth Protection”, “This is Scouting”, and
“Commissioner Fast Start” – all of which are done on line
through the National training site at www.myscouting.org,
and “Commissioner Basic”, a 6 hour live contact course which
is scheduled locally.
