| 2008 Scouting For Food: Saugahatchee
District Scouting for food, once again under the direction of Ted McMurtrie, was
a big success in 2008 with Pack 15 again taking home the trophy for most food
donated by a unit with almost 5,000 lbs! Though coming
short of our goal, the Saugahatchee District contributed well over 6 tons of food
to the Food Bank. Here's a note from Food Bank Executive Director, Martha Faupel,
and a breakdown of Food contributed by each unit: "It
was a very good weekend and we really appreciate all the hard work put in by the
boys, their leaders, and parents. The final total was 12,864 pounds of food. Here
is how it breaks down: Troop 218 - 580# + $46; Troop 7 - 801# ; Pack 36 - 301#
; Pack 29 - 832# ;Pack 800 - 995# ;Pack 15 - 4,929# ;Pack 396 - 129# ;Pack 811
- 1,852# ;Troop 371 - 275# ;Troop 356 - 406# ' Troop 11 - 326# ; Pack 13 - 464#
; Troop 354 - 260# ; Troop 29 - 714# We seem to have miscalculated badly on the
number of patches that would be needed. We had 200 on hand but quite a few didn't
get patches-I'm in the process of making calls to get a firm count on how many
more are needed so we can get them ordered. Martha Faupel Executive

winner of the coveted Scouting For Food Trophy is Pack 15, for the 4th year in
a row. |
------------------------------------------------------ Welcome
to Scouting for Food 2008. Bag distribution to homes will happen Saturday February
2rd and food pickup was February 9th. The collected food will be taken to the
East Alabama Food
Bank. Click HERE
for directions. If you did not receive bags at the January Roundtable, or assigned
area for collecting, contact Ted McMurtrie, below, who once again is our Scouting
for Food Director. We want to encourage all units and all
scouts in those units to participate. Our total official food collection was 12,664
lbs last year with additional cash donations of $403. We want to break the 20,000
lb goal this year! If each registered scout participates, this is an easy goal
to make if each scout collects his weight in food. Pack
15 was the winner of the coveted Eagle Trophy for most lbs. collected by a unit
last year. They collected over 4,000 lbs.
What a difference
we can make when all units participate. As always the winners are the scouts for
their community service and the individuals in need who benefit from the East
Alabama Food Bank. Thanks again to all our participants.

HERE to print a reminder
flyer to hand out at your Pack meeting/Den meeting. Scout
leaders could download, edit Pack/Troop number and contact information, and print
small bag flyers to attach to your own bags HERE.
You can repeat this, once edited, to print more than one at a time on a Word document
page. It was suggested that you put a rubber band "holder"
through the handle of each of the plastic district provided bags, loop the rubber
band through itself and then hang on the doorknob. This will keep wind from blowing
the bag from the doornob and into the street or yard. Ted
also suggested not to knock on doors when placing bags on doorknobs of homes,
but do knock when picking them up since sometimes people forget. Email reminders
and calls to friends and neighbors would help them to remember. Be
sure to walk with smaller scouts in case they approach an animal that is not contained.
