2010 Scouting For Food:

Scouting For Food Trophy, once again awarded to Pack 15 of Aub urn

This past week, the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts certainly demonstrated their motto of "helping others at all times" through this year's Scouting for Food, and the results were great. When the final can of food was weighed at the Food Bank, a total of 7,874 pounds of food had been collected! This is the equivalent of 5,250 meals. We are grateful for all the hard work by the boy scouts and their leaders to make this such a success.

As you know, the Food Bank works with local non-profit agencies or churches who then distribute food to the needy of our area. Currently, we are distributing an average of 310,000 pounds of food each month to more than 160 agencies in a six county area. These agencies include senior citizen centers, day cares for low-income families, emergency food pantries, rehabilitation centers, soup kitchens, shelters, and missions. This food feeds the elderly, disabled, mentally ill, homeless, working poor, battered women and unemployed workers.

Boy Scouting is about the business of training youth, and one of the great aspects of "Scouting for Food" is that young people are made more aware that hunger is a problem and are given an opportunity to do something about hunger. Our sincere thanks go to all who made this food drive such a success. The Food Bank is honored to partner with you in helping our community.

We have ordered "Scouting for Food" patches and will get those distributed when they arrive.

Notes from before the Drive:
----------------------------------------

Welcome to Scouting for Food 2010. Bag distribution to homes will happen Saturday February 6th all during the day and food pickup will be February 13th between 10am and 2pm to accomodate late deliveries, with snacks provided by the Food Bank. (This is a change from previous years with Pizza lunch, since times are tougher this year for the Food Bank). The collected food will be taken to the East Alabama Food Bank. Click HERE for directions. If you did not receive bags at the January Roundtable, or assigned area for collecting, contact Curtis Jennings, below, our Scouting for Food Director for 2010 or come to the Feb 4 Roundtable meeting at Lakeview Church. Thank you Curtis!

We want to encourage all units and all scouts in those units to participate. We want to break the 15,000 lb goal this year! If each registered scout participates, this is an easy goal to make if each scout collects his weight in food.

Pack 15 was the winner of the coveted Eagle Trophy for most lbs. collected by a unit last year. They collected almost 5,000 lbs!

What a difference we can make when all units participate. As always the winners are the scouts for their community service and the individuals in need who benefit from the East Alabama Food Bank. Thanks again to all our participants.

Scout leaders could download, edit Pack/Troop number and contact information, and print small bag flyers to attach to your own bags HERE. You can repeat this, once edited, to print more than one at a time on a Word document page.

It was suggested that you put a rubber band "holder" through the handle of each of the plastic district provided bags, loop the rubber band through itself and then hang on the doorknob. This will keep wind from blowing the bag from the doornob and into the street or yard.

Curtis also suggested not to knock on doors when placing bags on doorknobs of homes, but do knock when picking them up since sometimes people forget. Email reminders and calls to friends and neighbors would help them to remember.

Be sure to walk with smaller scouts in case they approach an animal that is not contained.
