| Ten members of Auburn's Troop 29 and two from LaGrange
recently completed a trek at the Philmont High Adventure Scout Ranch in New Mexico
as one of two crews from the Chattahoochee Council. During the 11-day trek which
started on June 16, the crew hiked 83 miles and climbed in elevation from 6,500
feet to just over 11,000. Highlights of the trek included hiking to 4 of the top-five
trail-accessible peaks, enjoying a sweat-lodge, black powder rifle shooting, an
old-time bluegrass stomp, black smithing, rock climbing and rappelling, and climbing
the "Tooth of Time." Adult advisors included Stan and John Harris, Sam Champion,
and Keener Lynn. Will Champion served as crew leader and Paul Kim served as crew
chaplain. Chris Allen, Nathan Champion, Daniel Harris, Gresham Lynn, Mark MacDonald,
and Taylor Sims made up the rest of the crew. | | | Troop
29 was chartered by AUMC in February 1998. Currently, Troop 29 has 25 registered
Scouts and 7adult leaders. The Troop has attended 9 BSA summer camps and received
Honor Troop each year. The Troop has also earned the Quality Unit Award for the
past seven years, including recognition for 2007. Troop
29 offers Scouts an annual program which includes monthly campouts, special Troop
activities, weekly meetings, and outdoor adventures including backpacking, white
water rafting, snow skiing and BSA summer camp. Interested
